Time Matters 10 Questions and Answers
Q: What do I need to do to get Version 10 if I have an Annual Maintenance Plan?
A: LexisNexis will send you download links and product codes via e-mail.
You don't need to contact LexisNexis to get your Version 10 e-mail. They will send it out to the e-mail address they have on file for you. I will also be sending out e-mails regarding the release of Version 10.
Q: Version 10 requires MS SQL Server. Is it just for larger offices?
A: No. Version 10 works for solos, small firms and larger firms.
Version 10 is a great product for even one user! It includes an option to install MS SQL Server 2008 Express. This free Microsoft software supports up to 9 users and runs on Windows XP and higher. The database size limit is 4 GB, but that isn't an issue so long as Attachment Bloat is controlled.
Q: Do I need an expensive server to run Time Matters 10 in a solo or small office?
A: No. You don't need a "real" server to run Time Matters 10.
Time Matters 10 runs on free MS SQL Server Express (2005 or 2008) and on Windows XP, Windows Vista and up. It runs well on a laptop with 2 GB of RAM. For more than a couple of users it makes sense to have a stand-alone Windows XP or higher "server" for the database. Time Matters 10 does not require a "real" server for under 10 users.
Q: If we run the database on a machine that no one uses, does that use up a license?
A: No.
Time Matters 10 needs to be installed on the machine that runs the MS SQL Server database, but that machine does not tie up a Time Matters license. You may use a Windows XP PC or other computer as your database "server" without getting an expensive server.
Q: What if we have 10 or more users?
A: The lowest cost approach is to run Time Matters 10 on Microsoft Small Business Server Premium.
Microsoft Small Business Server software is designed for small and medium-size offices. If you don't have a lot of users, a relatively inexpensive computer will be sufficient. The Premium edition includes the MS SQL Server you need for Time Matters 10. We will publish more about that later.
If you already have MS SQL Server running in your office, you should be able to run Time Matters 10 on it. MS SQL Server is designed to run multiple databases at once. You may need to add user licenses (CALs) if you don't already have enough.
